In our book, “Expert Video Poker for Las Vegas,” Chapter 11 is titled Beating Video Poker. Is this really possible? Can you beat video poker?
This depends on your definition of “beat.” Can you win money in the long run? I believe you can. Can you break even or lose at least in the long term? Most definitely. Can you make a living playing video poker? It’s not that easy, the fairest answer.
My dad made a list of five things you have to do to beat video poker visit poker88. He doesn’t clearly define the beat. I think that means you can win money in the long run. Let’s take a look at the five items and see if they still apply today.
The first is to become an Expert Player (EP), and not necessarily in every variation of the game. The EP knows which games to play, how to play them, and what to expect. When my dad wrote those words 20-plus years ago, there were variations to the game. Today there are maybe 5-10 times as much. You have little chance of mastering all of them. Your goal should be an EP with just one or two. If you master three or four, great. If your goal is to master it all, you are likely to fail.
The second item is game play with a return of more than 100% or very close. This technically falls below being Expert Players, who will be looking for the right games to play – those with the highest returns.
Deuces Wild is one of the most common which meets this criterion with some versions being over 100%. Even a fully paid Jack or Better with 99.5 percent would do it. But, remember, different machines may have different returns for the same variant. Check the paytable.
The third on our list is to enter a video poker tournament that gives 100% or more of the entry fee in prizes. As an EP, you need to have an edge over most competitions and therefore win more than just a fair share of the prize. This may be difficult to follow up on these days.
I know about a few video poker tournaments, but don’t believe there are as many as there used to be and not so many on the Strip. I watched a lot of “slots” tournaments! The same rules don’t apply to this as there is no way to profit from being an “expert” slots player.
Next up is joining the promotional slots club and getting your player card. While some of the specifics of these programs have changed, the basic idea is the same. You get a percentage of your total plays in some form of competition. You can also earn an absurd amount from just playing.
Free food, discounted hotel room rates, extra cashback are all available when you become a slot club member. I just spent a night with my family at CasaBlanca Resort in Mesquite. We got a free room and a discount for ice cream. I got this without betting a dime at the casino.
Even if you are not a gambler, just by being a member of the slots club you may be entitled to a 10-20% discount on some hotel rates. It’s hard to put a value on some of these items and it varies from person to person. However, all in all, you can expect to get back 0.3% of your stake in the free. This takes 99.5% gaming and pushes it to 99.8% or higher. If you play a 100% -plus game, it only reduces the margin of error and you are much more likely to become a winner. I cannot stress this enough.
The latter is the easiest of all – get the Royals fair share. It’s back to being an EP and knowing the right strategy. A refund of close to or more than 100% assumes a perfect play by the player. You have to know the strategy of the game you are playing in order to do this. But, video poker still has an element of luck associated with it.
Using the right strategy, you will splurge around every 40,000 hands on the jack or better. This accounts for 2% of the returns. 99.5% game to 97.5% game as you wait for Kingdoms.
As a rule of thumb you can use the factor of 3 to figure out what to expect when it comes to something like this. If the average is one in 40,000, it’s not uncommon to potentially get 3 out of 40,000 or go 120,000 (40,000 times 3) hands without getting one. If you do the former, you might win. If you do the latter, you may have lost. In the long run, it will come out and you will get your fair share. It probably won’t feel that way in the short term.
